Serving Sizes: What If I Don’t Carry A Scale With Me?!
When trying to stick to a healthy diet we often turn to the USDA Food Pyramid for advice on just how much is a healthy serving size. But these amounts are often given in ounces. I don’t know about you but when I’m eating away from home I don’t bring a scale with me! OK, I admit it – I don’t like to use a scale at home either. What a hassle!
Well, here are some guidelines to use for estimating a proper serving size while on the go, according to Fitness Magazine.
1 serving of meat = the size of a deck of cards
1 serving of cheese = the size of 6 dice
1 serving of fruit or vegetables = the size of your fist
1 serving of whole-grain bread = 1 slice
1 baked potato = 1 computer-mouse-size potato
1 serving of pancakes = 1 CD-size pancake
While I can’t imagine going to IHOP and ordering just 1 pancake, at least I’ll be aware of what I’m doing so I can cut back elsewhere. And no fair buying a huge computer mouse just so you can have a bigger potato!
